Streamliner: Raymond Loewy and Image-making in the Age of American Industrial Design

Streamliner: Raymond Loewy and Image-making in the Age of American Industrial Design

The true story of Raymond Loewy, whose designs are still celebrated for their unerring ability to advance American consumer taste.

Born in Paris in 1893 and trained as an engineer, Raymond Loewy revolutionized twentieth-century American industrial design. Combining salesmanship and media savvy, he created bright, smooth, and colorful logos for major corporations that included Greyhound, Exxon, and Nabisco. His designs for Studebaker automobiles, Sears Coldspot refrigerators, Lucky Strike cigarette packs, and Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives are iconic. Beyond his timeless designs, Loewy carefully built an international reputation through the assiduous courting of journalists and tastemakers to become the face of both a new profession and a consumer-driven vision of the American dream.

In Streamliner, John Wall traces the evolution of an industry through the lens of Loewy’s eclectic life, distinctive work, and invented persona. How, he asks, did Loewy build a business while transforming himself into a national brand a half century before “branding” became relevant? Placing Loewy in context with the emerging consumer culture of the latter half of the twentieth century, Wall explores how his approach to business complemented―or differed from―that of his well-known contemporaries, including industrial designers Henry Dreyfuss, Walter Teague, and Norman Bel Geddes. Wall also reveals how Loewy tailored his lifestyle to cement the image of “designer” in the public imagination and why the self-promotion that drove Loewy to the top of his profession began to work against him at the end of his career. Streamliner is an important and engaging work on one of the longest-lived careers in industrial design.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride: A Decade of Dapper

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride: A Decade of Dapper

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride: Decade of Dapper documents and celebrates 10 years of raising funds and awareness for men’s health initiatives with engaging stories and gorgeous photography. Starting from the simple, joyous act of riding a motorcycle, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) has united hundreds of thousands of smartly dressed gentlefolk around the world on classic and vintage-style motorcycles to raise over $35 million for prostate cancer and men’s mental health initiatives. The annual event has attracted the world’s attention and created some truly amazing stories (and thousands of great images) along the way.

The success of the DGR has seen it become so much more than just a charity event. It’s now a kind of global moto family that’s made up of thousands of incredible stories, characters, cities, and ambassadors that are all wrapped up in a kind of motorcycling fashion renaissance. It’s as much about the amazing people that make it happen as it is about the bikes.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is filled with:

  • Engaging stories about the riders and what motivates them
  • Dapper fashion and stunning images from dozens of celebrated moto photographers in some of the world’s most iconic locations
  • Personal contributions from the likes of actor and TV presenter Charley Boorman, MotoGP world champion Freddy Spencer, and actor Jai Courtney

As a lasting record of the hundreds of stories of triumph and heartbreak from the DGR family, this book brings to life the positive, global impact that motorcyclists have made on men’s health.

Birdmen: The Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, and the Battle to Control the Skies

Birdmen: The Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, and the Battle to Control the Skies

The feud between this nation’s great air pioneers, the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss, was a collision of unyielding and profoundly American personalities. On one side, a pair of tenacious siblings who together had solved the centuries-old riddle of powered, heavier-than-air flight. On the other, an audacious motorcycle racer whose innovative aircraft became synonymous in the public mind with death-defying stunts. For more than a decade, they battled each other in court, at air shows, and in the newspapers. The outcome of this contest of wills would shape the course of aviation history—and take a fearsome toll on the men involved.

Birdmen sets the engrossing story of the Wrights’ war with Curtiss against the thrilling backdrop of the early years of manned flight, and is rich with period detail and larger-than-life personalities: Thomas Scott Baldwin, or “Cap’t Tom” as he styled himself, who invented the parachute and almost convinced the world that balloons were the future of aviation; John Moisant, the dapper daredevil who took to the skies after three failed attempts to overthrow the government of El Salvador, then quickly emerged as a celebrity flyer; and Harriet Quimby, the statuesque silent-film beauty who became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. And then there is Lincoln Beachey, perhaps the greatest aviator who ever lived, who dazzled crowds with an array of trademark twists and dives—and best embodied the romance with death that fueled so many of aviation’s earliest heroes.

A dramatic story of unimaginable bravery in the air and brutal competition on the ground, Birdmen is at once a thrill ride through flight’s wild early years and a surprising look at the personal clash that fueled America’s race to the skies.

Unlocking the Sky: Glenn Hammond Curtiss and the Race to Invent the Airplane

Unlocking the Sky: Glenn Hammond Curtiss and the Race to Invent the Airplane

Unlocking the Sky tells the extraordinary tale of the race to design, refine, and manufacture a manned flying machine, a race that took place in the air, on the ground, and in the courtrooms of America. While the Wright brothers threw a veil of secrecy over their flying machine, Glenn Hammond Curtiss — perhaps the greatest aviator and aeronautical inventor of all time — freely exchanged information with engineers in America and abroad, resulting in his famous airplane, the June Bug, which made the first ever public flight in America. Fiercely jealous, the Wright brothers took to the courts to keep Curtiss and his airplane out of the sky and off the market. Ultimately, however, it was Curtiss’s innovations and designs, not the Wright brothers’, that served as the model for the modern airplane.

Austin-Healey: A celebration of the Big Healeys

Austin-Healey: A celebration of the Big Healeys

The Austin-Healey (“Big” Healey) is one of the iconic British sports cars: the first Austin-Healey 100 model was unveiled at the 1952 Earls Court Motor Show, and when the last car rolled off the production line in 1967, over 73,000 examples had been built. The four and six-cylinder Healey 100s and the later 3000 model were masculine ‘hairy chested’ sports cars in the best tradition.

This edition is designed to appeal to all fans of British sports cars as well as to Austin-Healey owners and enthusiasts. The book features the complete history of the car; period and modern colour photographs; and production figures and specifications.

This is a reprint of Bill Piggott’s first Austin Healey book, although he has subsequently written two others, with a third being prepared.

Rover P6 1963-1977 2000,2200 & 3500

Rover P6 1963-1977 2000,2200 & 3500

In the 18 years since this book was first published, it’s very satisfying to record that more information has come to light. So, in preparing this second edition during 2011, I decided to update and amend where possible. A lot of people have contributed new information in one way or another over the years. Readers familiar with the first edition may notice that the chapter about buying and running a P6 has been left out of this update. It was, in any case, out of date because more and different problems have come to light as the cars have become older and, more importantly, omitting those pages provide the space for comprehensive appendix updates. Appendices: A) Technical specifications, B) Vehicle identification, C) Main production changes, D) Production figures, E) Paint and trim options, F) P6 prices in the UK, G) P6 Rovers at Earls Court, H) Performance figures.

British Motorcycles 1945-1965

British Motorcycles 1945-1965

From Aberdale to Wooler

From the forgotten Aberdale, of Llwynypia, Wales, to the ingeniously eccentric Wooler, of north-west London, British Motorcycles 1945-1965 offers alphabetical coverage – in no less than 600 pages – of British motorcycle makes of the period 1945-1965, among them great names such as AJS, BSA, Matchless, Norton, Royal Enfield, Triumph and Vincent.

The two decades covered by this book represent the final flowering of the motorcycle industry in Britain, a period when British bikes were shipped all over the world, when America discovered high-performance British twins and when ton-up boys vied with each other in feats of horrific daring. In the meantime, rush-hour roads resounded to the buzz and crackle of ride-to-work two-strokes, men hidden in cumbersome waterproof coats slogged along on unwieldy sidecar outfits, wife on the pillion, kids alongside, and courting couples, carefree, hugging tight, enjoyed a sunlit ride to the seaside or into the hills.

In this intensely detailed study, author Rinsey Mills gives the histories of the motorcycle manufacturers and then provides information on the models they produced, year by year, using original material from sales brochures for the illustrations, not only to identify the bikes and to highlight model changes and revisions, but also to give the flavour of the times when they were to be seen going about their business.

Whether your taste is for the obscure and the might-have-beens, for workaday two-strokes, nimble scramblers, thumping singles, ton-up twins or fiery road racers, all are here, offering an unrivaled store of knowledge and information as well as more than 1,500 illustrations that provide a powerful evocation of motorcycling in these two decades. The illustrations are accompanied by generous and informative captions which help to convey the strengths, weaknesses and character of the machines, as well as provide intriguing technical insights.

Rubber An American Industrial History

Rubber An American Industrial History

“The rubber industry was born in bankruptcy and built through bankruptcies. As this history details, many of the great rubber barons—Charles Goodyear, Harvey Firestone, B.F. Goodrich, F.A. Seiberling—found themselves or their companies in bankruptcy courts. Fortunately, the industry has always proven as elastic as its product.br>

From the early search for an American location to process the rubber of the tropics to the collapse of the industry, this is the story of rubber in America. ”
